The last time we visited Melbourne was in 2002 and at that time we didn’t have a digital camera, so we wanted to go back to all the places we had enjoyed so much to capture them in this medium….well, that’s MY excuse…and I’m sticking to it!! One of the places we enjoyed very much in 2002 was the Healesville Animal Sanctuary…where I first had a close encounter with a kangaroo and was able to mutter those never-to-be-forgotten words, “What’s up, Skip?”…so today we revisited the sanctuary. Much has changed for the better since then, as the site now boasts a huge state-of-the-art wildlife hospital and there are lots of “meet the keeper” experiences and the interaction of feeding the various creatures. After our recent experience with all the animals at Russell Island we felt confident to proceed! (AAAwwww I DO miss Lillian though!).
For lunch we moved on to Domaine Chandon winery….the Australian home of Moet and Chandon, famous throughout the world for it’s fine champagnes. Out here though, wine made from locally grown grapes can only be known as “sparkling wine” as the name “champagne” can only be used for wine made from grapes grown in the Champagne region of France….did you know that?
As you might expect THIS vineyard is THE vineyard to visit with the most amazing grounds and facilities for visitors. After our wine tasting, we settled into the Greenpoint Brasserie for our customary cheese platter together with delicious Spanish ham and enjoyed a glass of Prestige Cuvee 2002. We took a tour of the winery and grounds before we left, having enjoyed a most memorable day.
