You may remember from our visit last year …. WE LOVE MELBOURNE!!
We only have a few days to revisit our old haunts before the 4-day Formula 1 Grand Prix event starts, but we will certainly make the best of it! Our hotel is overlooking Albert Park (where the Grand Prix will be held later in the week), so we don´t have far to go.One great feature of the city is the free Melbourne City Tourist Shuttle bus which stops at key tourist attractions and destinations in and around the city of Melbourne. You can hop on and hop off the bus at any of the stops at key city destinations including: Melbourne Museum and Carlton Gardens; Queen Victoria Market; Melbourne Aquarium; Immigration Museum; Southbank; the Shrine of Remembrance; Royal Botanic Gardens and Chinatown. The shuttle runs between 10am and 4pm daily, has an informative on-board commentary and the complete round-trip takes approximately 50 minutes, though we usually opt to jump on and off wherever the mood takes us. We revisited the National Gallery of Victoria and the Queen Victoria Market, but it is always fascinating to see the contrast of the old and new buildings standing side by side.
We also spent some time wandering along the Southbank by the Yarra River, watching the local crews training in their rowing boats.
There is always time to head off to one of our favourite areas, Lygon Street in the Italian quarter of the city, for the amazing food and cakes before heading back to the heart of the city around Federation Square.
