We took the overnight train from Malaysia into Thailand and are now based in Chiang Mai, the largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand. We will be staying here for the next ten days or so, because there are lots of things we want to do in this area.
The city of Chiang Mai (meaning “new city”) is located on the Ping River, 700 km north of Bangkok, among the highest mountains in the country. The city was founded in 1296 and surrounded by a moat and defensive wall, since nearby Burma was a constant threat. Today, of course, the old city walls and moat have become two of it’s most attractive features.
OH – and just in case you are wondering about the title of this post – there are huge pictures of the King of Thailand outside most important buildings and monuments, hence The King and I!
