Before we left home in early January, I bought a big packet of multi-coloured balloons to give out to children as we went along on our travels around SE Asia .
I had heard tales of young children being used to earn money by selling cheap trinkets to tourists and had decided I would not be a part of it. In my opinion, buying from these children encourages them to be kept away from things that children should be doing – like going to school and playing.
Instead of buying, I would give the child a balloon which was something for them, personally. Most children were very gracious with their thank-yous, some wanted more, a few brought their friends along, but all had big smiles on their faces.
